Police arrest 6 over illegal DSTV signal

OFFICIALS of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, Thursday, in Onitsha arrested six persons over alleged illegal transmission of signals of Digital Satellite Television, DSTV, and recovered hi-tech electrical gadgets worth about N7 million.

The team, led by the NCC Director of Enforcement, Mr. Austin Amodu, was assisted in the operation by the police. Among the streets raided were Oguta, Ekwulobia, Nnewi, Ihembosi, Venn Road South, Iboko, Otumoye and Upper New Market.

Amodu said the suspects were illegally using the recovered gadgets to encrypt the signals of DSTV, adding that they had already installed their illegal decoders to more than 200 homes in the city for fees ranging between N500 and N2000.

Items recovered from the suspects include cable television signal enhancers, boosters, senders, smart cards, cables and decoders.

He said that the suspects, who were being detained, would be arraigned in court after investigations.

According to Amodu, the commission would soon fish out those who benefited from the illegal devise for possible prosecution and commended security operatives for assisting his men in the operation.

He urged the people to engage the services of genuine cable television networks so as not to run foul of the law, assuring that the raid would henceforth be a regular feature.
